Spotlight on Melissa and Bryanna Bryanna & Melissa Sloan - Food Bank Volunteers

The West Seattle Food Bank has helped the Sloan family through lean times. Then two of the family members became volunteers, and started handing out food and bagging rice because they said, “We were bored and heard it was fun.” Two years later Bryanna, age 12, and her cousin, Melissa, age 9, who live with their grandma, “Nonny,” continue to volunteer. Many of the volunteers at WSFB are individuals that have needed to use the food bank due to a variety of circumstances and have found that by volunteering they are part of the community. The new West Seattle Food Bank & Community Resource Center will allow the food bank to expand the volunteer program and offer many new services to help struggling families and “make new friends” says Bryanna and Melissa.

Capital Campaign Update

A Message from the Executive Directors
The Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association (DNDA) and the West Seattle Food Bank (WSFB) have come together to accomplish what neither organization could do alone. We believe that for a community to thrive, individuals need to have their basic needs met, needs like affordable housing and nutritional food. But to truly thrive, families need community, opportunities for self expression and lifelong learning. “One community” helps families and youth address emergency needs, achieve stability and find their unique voice. We are excited to be a part of this West Seattle endeavor. We believe if a family is provided the right tools not only does the family benefit, the entire community becomes stronger.

The $7.3 million campaign goal will support the Historic Cooper Cultural Arts Center, a new West Seattle Food Bank & Community Resource Center and Croft Place Townhomes. We are 92% of the way to reaching our goal. Will you please help us reach the finish line!

We invite you to read on and learn more about the impact of these projects on our community and how you can help build an even stronger West Seattle.

Project Updates

The Croft Place Townhomes Project is 80% complete, with all of the buildings framed, sided, and roofed. Painting has begun inside and out. Croft stands out as a model of sustainability, built to high standards of energy and water efficiency, air quality and materials. We are also beginning discussions with Pomegranate Center about leading a series of workshops with the residents to engage them in community-building art projects. The project continues to be within budget and scheduled for move in July 1st. Learn more about the Croft Townhomes

Construction on Cooper is going well. Walsh has completed 22% of Phase 1 construction. We chose colors for the exterior of the building, and in June all the windows and trim will be refurbished and re-installed in a lovely forest green. The permit application for Phase 2 (the second half of the cultural center) has been submitted to the City. We have secured a bridge loan from Impact Capital to cover our cash needs until all the Capital Campaign is complete. Learn more and take a photographic tour of the Historic Cooper School

The Food Bank and West Seattle Community Resource Center is in high gear, getting ready for a building permit submittal this month. The project has been approved by Neighborhood Design Review. We have our design team working to achieve LEED certification on the project, a measure of environmental sustainability. We are waiting for one more funding award on the housing side of the project, and if we receive this in mid-June we will be on track to start construction in September.
